What do you think photographers do when they lose a big client?

Freak out? Stay calm? Well if you ask me, that totally depends on their connections and how much they have promoted themselves in the last 12 months. As a commercial photographer, you have to stay fresh in the minds of art buyers no matter how busy you are.

Photographers have told me they fully rely on getting new jobs through referrals. That’s wonderful when it works, but the reality is you can’t count on referrals alone. The market is saturated with hungry new photographers eager to get their foot in the door.

Promoting your work consistently is the key to long-term success!

This is what I’ve noticed. Some photographers have a clear vision on what they want to accomplish with their work. Each year, they set up a marketing plan to decide where, when and to whom they want to promote themselves. Their goal is to make new connections with key decision makers and to maintain good relationships with their clients. So when they lose a big client it's definitely a loss, but they can tap into the "warm" connections they nurtured of the years.

A lot of other photographers are not so clear on their vision & goals. Many don’t set up a marketing plan. They post their newest work sporadically on social media. They mail out postcards without a plan and a specific goal. They go to portfolio reviews to get feedback from art buyers without planting a seed for future assignments. Photographers that don't promote themselves consistently have a much harder time when they lose a big client. As you probably know, it takes a while to get your name, work & brand on art buyers' radar.

The whole purpose of promoting yourself is to be seen as an experienced and trustworthy photographer. You want to create new connections. Get people interested in your work. Create opportunities to meet with art buyers in person. Build relationships. Wow your contacts until they become your clients.
